Ingredients For Pressure Cook

  • Toor Dal / Split Pigeon Pea’s – 1.5 Cups
  • Salt – 1 teaspoon
  • Turmeric – 1 teaspoon
  • Water – 3 Cups

Ingredients For Masala

  • Ghee – 1 tablespoon
  • Cumin – 3 teaspoon
  • Ginger, chopped – 1 tablespoon
  • Garlic, chopped – 1 tablespoon
  • Onion, chopped – 1 big
  • Green Chillies – 5 (Slit)
  • Tomatoes, chopped – 3 medium
  • Salt – 1 teaspoon
  • Kashmiri Red Chilli Powder – 2 teaspoon
  • Kasoori Methi / Dried Fenugreek Leaves – 1 teaspoon
  • Cilantro – 2 tablespoon
  • Garam Masala – 1 tablespoon
  • Water – 1 Cup

Ingredients For Tadka

  • Ghee – 1 tablespoon
  • Cumin / Jeera – 1 teaspoon
  • Hing / Asafoetida – ¼th teaspoon
  • Garlic – 1 teaspoon
  • Dry Red Chillies – 4
  • Cilantro

Directions For Pressure Cook

  1. On medium high heat add dal, turmeric, salt and water in a pressure cooker.
  2. Mix it well and pressure cook for it for 2 to 3 Whistles (use 7-liter cooker).
  3. After the third whistle turns off the flame and let the cooker depressurize on its own.

Directions For Masala

  1. Add ghee in a big pan on medium-high heat.
  2. Once the ghee is hot, add cumin seeds.
  3. Add ginger and garlic, when cumin seeds start to crackle.
  4. Cook till the raw aroma of ginger goes away (for 1 to 2 minutes).
  5. Now add green chilies and chopped.
  6. Cook till onions are brown and translucent.
  7. Add salt and tomatoes. Mix well and cover it with a lid.
  8. Cook for another 3 to 4 minutes.
  9. Remove the Lid, tomatoes should be cooked and soft.
  10. Add kasoori methi, Kashmiri red chili powder and chopped dhaniya leaves. Mix Well.
  11. Add Water and Dal to the Masala. Mix Well.
  12. Now add garam masala and mix well.
  13. Cover with lid and cook for 3 minutes.

Directions

  1. Add ghee in a shallow pan.
  2. Add cumin seeds and hing once the ghee is heated.
  3. Once the cumin starts to crackle add dry red chilies and garlic.
  4. Cook till garlic starts turning brown.
  5. Add it on top of dal.
